They help people cope with personal issues that might be affecting their performance at school or work.
It is a counselling psychologist's job to assist other people to better understand themselves and everyday life by discussing past and present issues, setting goals for the future, explaining actions to help the situation and encouraging them to take those actions. A counselling psychologist will talk you through your problems and sometimes use activities or mental exercises to assist in this process, however psychologists can not prescribe drugs/medication, if it is necessary and or issue is beyond their field, a counselling psychologist may refer you to a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist.
Some examples of the work and work settings of a counselling psychologist would be:
- A child who is having trouble making friends at school
- A married couple who are constantly fighting
- A woman dealing with post-traumatic stress
- A teenager whose parents are divorcing
- A businessman stressed out about his workload
- A widow grieving the loss of her husband
Sometimes if there is trauma in a school or workplace that might affect everybody, counselling psychologists will be called in to talk to the group and then offer individual sessions
Counselling Psychologists with their own private practice will have clients make appointments, usually on a regular basis, and charge them by the hour. Ideally the counselling is discontinued when both the client and psychologist believe the issue is resolved, or if the client needs to be referred to someone else.
